Wanderlust - Underpass

For the next environment I wanted to show a drastic change from the rusty scrapyard so, opted to go for a more urban feel but didn't wanted to have the bus parked on a normal city street. This also wouldn't be viable for a long bus that would most likely take up 4 car spaces. When doing some research I discovered underpass images which is very intriguing because motorways/highways are really loud but in a city every square foot counts so some people have to resort to living in such conditions. I wanted my character to be in an environment with this feel but be in a more desolate location so i decided to make it the local skate spot. This would be far enough away from the residential areas to not effect them but still within the city limits.

I enjoyed creating this piece because it had strong silhouettes which was a key point to have when the environment lighting is low. Compared to the previous environment which focused on leading the viewer around the garage this piece was more about layering and bringing the viewer down from the skate park to the upper lever of the motorway. Another key element was trying to keep the viewer involved so I opted to make the bus almost hidden behind the lower level of the motorway, meaning the viewer had to pan around to the opposite side to find it.

Since the piece was a low light scene I didn't focus on the number of visible assets like in the garage were all the tools and equipment are in clear sight so, I focused more on the lit areas like the skate park and the motorway. With their being more assets and stronger lighting it would draw the viewers attention and away from the bus.

As I did with the garage I opted to combine assets on the same UV map as this would help loading time on Sketchfab.
Overall I'm pleased with the end result and I achieved the feel for the piece I originally set myself. Unfortunately I used most of my time on the garage environment and felt some areas with the underpass could have more attention however, this project taught me the importance of time management and the repercussions with doing it incorrectly. One of the best elements of my honors project was working on Sketchfab. It truly is a great way for display assets and in some cases creating full environments for the viewer to explore as they please. Sketchfab is a site that I will continue to upload my pieces and are excited to see how they can improve on such a great platform.
